No One Has Ever Achieved His Dreams Without Confidence In Himself
Leadership Of SELF Begins With Being Honest With SELF

Are you asking the right questions about SELF, Inc., and are you asking yourself the hard questions? Leadership of SELF begins with being honest with SELF. It is a step no one can take for you, except you.
Ask The Right Questions

Some decisions can be made in more than one way, or they can be subdivided into incremental decisions. Either way, the process begins with asking the right questions.

Wounded But Not Destroyed
By Herman Cain
On September 11, 2001 the United States of America was wounded but not destroyed. Our hearts were wounded for the families whose loved ones were lost. Our economy was wounded. Businesses were wounded. Our lives were disrupted with a new anxiety about what will happen next, as America fights back. Because of our wounds the scars will remain but we have been wounded before, and the American dream was not and will not be destroyed.
We remember the self-inflicted wounds of the Civil War. The scars of slavery are still there, but we moved on. The wounds of World War 1, The Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam are wounds we will never forget, but the American dream lived and lives on. The dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness lives on in each citizen according to his or her definition of happiness.
Our founding fathers dreamed of creating the greatest country in the world. Their dream kept us focused in the midst of conflict and war. We have not only inherited their dream, we are living their dream. It is now our responsibility not to allow any act against us as a nation to destroy that dream for ourselves or for our children.
Some say that freedom is not free. The same is true of the pursuit of happiness. Some have paid with great personal sacrifice, and others have paid with their lives. Across all generations we must thank them.
I must specifically thank my Dad, who for me exemplified the American dream, who sacrificed his health by working three jobs all at the same time to give my brother and me a little better start in life than he had.
First and always, I thank God. Who do you thank? When you answer that question, you will find the strength and determination to go on with living.
The war against terrorism will be with us indefinitely. And just as the collective resolve of the American people has won wars in the past, the victories have always started with the resolve of each individual citizen. Yes, we must regroup and redefine "business as usual," but we will live on, or those who died will have died in vain.
No one can destroy a person's dream except the dreamer, and only if they stop believing in themselves and their dream. Dreams are destroyed when you give in or give up. We will never give up.
The American dream is alive and well. Wounded, but not destroyed.
Teenagers
There are many things you have to deal with as a teenager, and three critical rules can make your teenage years a lot smoother, and a much better preparation for a successful and happy adulthood.
As a teenager, your first rule of survival is to have a dream. You do not have to know how or when you're going to get there, but continually answer this question, "What is my dream?"
Part B of this rule is to not let friends talk you out of your dream or into something that jeopardizes it. When all is said and done, it's your life and it's your dream.
As you get older and smarter, you will discover more and more about how to make your dream come true. Along the way, you may also discover a new dream or a bigger dream. CEOs have vision, which is a dream. They need resources to reach their dream, one of which is education. The more you learn, the more excited you will be about doing the things you have to do, in order to achieve the things you want to do. Have a dream!
The second rule of teenage survival is to accept your life for what it is, and for what it can become. It's not where you start in life. It's what you do with the start you have.
You did not choose your life, but you can choose what you do with your life. You did not choose your parents or guardian, but they chose to love you. Loving you doesn't mean serving all your material wants. It means giving you emotional, psychological, and intellectual guidance. We all need love. It's human nature. Let them love you, and love them back by making the most of what you do with your life.
The third teenage survival rule is to start now. Every day gives you a chance to keep your life going in the right direction. It's okay if you're not sure what that direction is, because one of the advantages of being a teenager is that you will have many opportunities to discover new directions. No one knows how many opportunities they will be given, so just start somewhere, and start now.
A Better World
By Herman Cain
When my first grandchild, Celena Patrice, was born in January, 1999, I looked at her little fifteen minute old face and the first thought that came to my mind was not "How do we give her a better start in life?" My first thought was "How do I make this a better world?"
During those moments as I looked at Celena's little face, I couldn't help but think about all the other little faces in the world, and what type of world they would inherit. At that moment, my past dreams and accomplishments seemed insignificant in comparison to the many challenges we face as a nation and as a world of nations.
Everyone is blessed with different abilities. But when we choose to be CEO of SELF,we allow ourselves to dream. We empower ourselves to be happy. And we use our God given abilities to make a difference in the lives of others and in the world. As CEO of SELF,a better world is our responsibility. One little face at a time.

Do What You Really Love Doing
As CEO of SELF, the buck stops with you for your success and happiness, no matter how much you delegate that responsibility to others, or simply deny that anyone has that responsibility. You may have some influential people on the Board of Directors of SELF, such as your spouse or parents, but you have to make the big decisions in your life. Whether it is a big career decision, business decision, or personal decision, it's your call, because you're in charge.
The Happiness Zone
I remember watching Michael Jordan play basketball in a televised game one day. As the commentators would say, he was "on fire." He just seemed to sink every shot he made. After one particularly unbelievable shot, Michael, passing in front of the camera, just shrugged his shoulders as if to say even he was in disbelief that that last shot had gone in. Michael was in the zone. He knew he was in the zone. An athlete is in the zone when exceptional conscious ability and exceptional subconscious execution come together.
